Maxvoltar - Dreaming of an Apple Tablet →
I’ve been thinking about this issue for a while now, especially seeing as many respected Mac geeks have gone the “Hey, I’ll just get a desktop and portable Mac, sync ‘em, and it’ll work out great!” route that I’d been wondering about, going on to write follow up posts that basically consist of “Holy frack, this isn’t worth more of my sanity, I give up, just buy a MacBook Pro”.
So far the best idea I’ve had as to how to get the best of both worlds (desktop/portable etc.) would be to have an iMac and a MacBook, getting around the syncing issue by always booting the desktop from the MacBook running in Firewire disk mode. That way the data is always the same, but the internal drive in the iMac would also be available when booted from it, along with all the computing power and every inch of the rather expansively beautiful displays.
As much as I like the idea though, I sense a combination of FW speed limitations (especially if I stuck an SSD in the MacBook) and OS X being less than amused at having its hardware change so substantially on a regular basis, along with having to restart to switch to the other computer, would probably ensure this worked out rather less wonderfully than it does in my geeky little mind.
Thus, if Apple do somewhat decide to answer my prayers to the IT gods by making something similar to what Tim is proposing, methinks I’ll be somewhat pleased I just confirmed I have 1-Click enabled on the Apple store.
